Dempsey lived the American Dream rising from the hobo jungles to the greatest prize in sport. His fights became huge events drawing the first million dollar gates in sporting history. He won the championship on Independence Day the Fourth of July 1919 by battering the giant cowboy Jess Willard into submission and through the Roaring Twenties nobody who was anybody could afford to miss a Dempsey fight. A total of 120 757 fans saw him box Gene Tunney in Philadelphia in 1926. George Foreman was a contrasting figure to Dempsey but another great champion. An Olympic gold medallist as a teenager Foreman won the world heavyweight title by knocking Joe Frazier down six times in a couple of rounds in Kingston Jamaica in 1973. At his peak - against Frazier and Ken Norton - he was one of the most ruthless fighting machines the sport has ever seen.
