Why Treat Water ? Water Hardness can occur even in areas where the water has traditionally been soft because of changes in the way the water industry operates. Water sharing between regions means that hard water (measured as over 150mg per litre of dissolved calcium carbonate) is now distributed over larger areas than its original source. Hard water quickly causes scale to form on all surfaces which come into contact with it from elements in hot water tanks to taps and shower heads. This scummy furring-up reduces the efficiency of the equipment requiring more energy and making equipment more prone to expensive inconvenient breakdowns. According to British Water's Quality Water Group just 1.6mm build-up of scale in heating systems can cause a 12% loss in efficiency. At the same time hard water has lower cleaning efficiency so higher quantities of detergent shampoo and other cleaning materials are needed. British Water's Quality Group estimates that water softening can save a 4 person household an average of £200 per year.
