Aquarian Cichlid Pellets are designed to provide the optimum protein requirements (around 36%) of popular aquarium cichlids in a format specially designed for their needs. Generally, the protein requirements of cichlid species are higher than those of goldfish and more temperate species, as reflected in this Aquarian Food. The Aquarian Cichlid Pellets also offer variety with two different pellets. The yellow pellets are formulated to contain egg protein, which delivers additional essential amino acids, and in particular methionine and cystine. The brown pellets contain a higher percentage of fish protein. Colour, Behaviour and Mouth Brooding The Aquarian Cichlid Pellet contains marigold meal, a natural source of carotenoids and in particular lutein, proven to enhance the natural yellow, red and orange colouration of fish. This will enable fish to reach their full genetic potential in terms of colour. Many cichlid species are brightly coloured, such as the popular apistogrammids and many of the African lake cichlids. Colour (and body markings) play a vital role in visual communication in cichlid fishes, including spawning behaviour. For example, aquarium studies by Wickler (1962) revealed the function of the orange spots on the anal fins of male haplochromines cichlids. Wickler noted that these spots were similar in colour and size to the fishs own eggs. He also knew these fish were mouth-brooders (i.e. the female takes her freshly laid eggs into her mouth). Wickler discovered that the spots serve as egg dummies that attract the spawning female to the vicinity of the males genital papilla.
