As the saying goes, “and now for something different”. This is a beautiful and fascinating plant, a parasite lacking green leaves, all you ever get to see of it are the flowers which are produced in late summer. These can be red, purple or white in the wild although our seed comes from pink ones and can be best described as like the corona of a Daffodil flower without the frill of petals. This can be up to 2 ins. long and is enclosed in a distinctive spathe-like calyx. Very interesting and said to be easy to grow, host plants are Grasses (our supplier uses Miscanthus spp.) and Zingiber and allied genera. It can be grown by exposing the roots of an existing plant and sowing the seed in close contact with them or, alternatively, mix the seed with a grass seed (or seeds) and sow together. A compost of peat and sand has been suggested. In India, it is prepared with sugar and nutmeg and eaten as an antiscorbutic. 4-12 ins.
